Zuilen

Zuilen is a Dutch word that translates directly to "columns" or "pillars" in English. The term can refer to literal architectural columns, or it can be used metaphorically to describe something or someone that is a strong supporter, foundation, or pillar of a community, organization, or belief system.

In the context of architecture, "zuilen" refers to the classical structural elements used to support a roof or upper story. These columns can be of various styles, such as Doric, Ionic, or Corinthian, each characterized by distinct proportions, capitals, and bases.

Beyond its architectural definition, "zuilen" can also signify fundamental principles or cornerstones. For example, someone described as a "zuil" of society is considered a crucial and upstanding member. Similarly, a particular concept might be considered one of the "zuilen" supporting a broader theory or framework.

In some historical or political contexts within the Netherlands, "verzuiling" (pillarization) refers to the historical socio-political division of Dutch society along religious and ideological lines. Under this system, society was organized into separate 'pillars' or groups (Catholic, Protestant, Socialist, Liberal, etc.), each with its own social institutions, such as schools, newspapers, and political parties. While this strict division has largely diminished, its legacy continues to influence Dutch social and political life. The plural of "zuil" ("zuilen") would then refer to the multiple pillars involved in such a societal structure.
