Class Act (graphic novel)
Class Act is a 2020 graphic novel written and illustrated by Jerry Craft. It is a companion book to Craft's Newbery Medal-winning New Kid. Class Act continues the story of Jordan Banks, Drew Ellis, and Liam Landers as they navigate their experiences as students at Riverdale Academy Day School (RAD).
The narrative focuses on Drew Ellis, exploring themes of socioeconomic disparity, racial microaggressions, and the challenges of being a Black student in a predominantly white institution. Unlike New Kid, which primarily centered on Jordan's artistic aspirations and fitting in, Class Act delves deeper into the systemic issues and personal struggles faced by Drew due to his family's financial situation and the assumptions made about him by his peers and teachers. The graphic novel uses visual storytelling and relatable dialogue to address complex topics such as implicit bias, stereotype threat, and the burden of representation. It also highlights the importance of allyship and the power of friendship in overcoming adversity. Class Act has received critical acclaim for its honest portrayal of these issues and its accessible format for young readers.
