Thibilis

Thibilis (also sometimes seen as Tibiles) was an ancient Roman city located in North Africa, specifically in what is now present-day Algeria. Situated in the Hodna region, Thibilis flourished under Roman rule, eventually achieving the status of a municipium, signifying a significant degree of self-governance and Roman citizenship for its inhabitants.

The city's history extends back to the reign of Emperor Vespasian in the 1st century CE, with evidence suggesting a foundation date around 75 CE. Thibilis experienced considerable growth and prosperity during the 2nd and 3rd centuries CE, becoming an important agricultural and economic center. The city's strategic location contributed to its success, connecting inland areas with coastal trade routes.

Archaeological excavations at Thibilis have revealed a well-preserved Roman city, offering valuable insights into Roman urban planning and daily life in North Africa. Key features uncovered include a forum, temples dedicated to various Roman deities (such as Saturn and Ceres), bath complexes, a market, and numerous private residences. The city also boasted an impressive system of aqueducts and cisterns, ensuring a reliable water supply for its inhabitants.

Following the decline of Roman power in the region, Thibilis experienced a period of instability. While it continued to be inhabited after the Vandal invasion in the 5th century, its significance gradually diminished. The arrival of Islam in the 7th century ultimately led to the abandonment of the site, leaving behind the impressive ruins that are now studied by archaeologists and historians.

The ruins of Thibilis are located near the modern town of Sétif in Algeria and are a significant archaeological site, attracting visitors interested in Roman history and North African heritage.
