Normétal

Normétal is a former municipality in the Abitibi-Témiscamingue region of Quebec, Canada. Situated approximately 80 kilometers northwest of Amos, it was primarily a mining town, its economy heavily reliant on the now-closed Normétal mine.

History: The town's history is intrinsically linked to the discovery and exploitation of a copper and zinc ore body in the area. The Normétal mine, operated by several different companies over the years, was a significant employer and economic driver for the region. The town was officially incorporated in 1937. Fluctuations in metal prices and eventual depletion of the ore reserves led to the mine's closure in 1975.

Geography: Normétal is located in a flat, predominantly forested area characteristic of the Abitibi region. The climate is subarctic, with long, cold winters and short, cool summers.

Demographics: Following the closure of the mine, Normétal experienced a significant decline in population. Many residents relocated to seek employment in other regions. The remaining population is significantly older than the Quebec average.

Amalgamation: In 2012, Normétal was amalgamated with the municipality of Saint-Lambert to form the new municipality of Normétal. While the name Normétal was retained for the amalgamated entity, the original townsite remains a distinct sector within the larger municipality.

Economy: The economy of the Normétal sector is limited, with agriculture and forestry playing smaller roles. Some residents commute to larger centres for work. The town's history and former mining operations are of some historical interest.
