The Silence (2019 film)
The Silence is a 2019 American-German monster horror film directed by John R. Leonetti and starring Kiernan Shipka, Stanley Tucci, Miranda Otto, and John Corbett. The screenplay, written by Carey Van Dyke and Shane Van Dyke, is based on the 2015 horror novel of the same name by Tim Lebbon.
The film follows a family as they attempt to survive in a world terrorized by winged creatures called "vesps" that hunt by sound. Similar in premise to A Quiet Place (2018), The Silence focuses on a teenager named Ally Andrews (Shipka), who lost her hearing in an accident years prior, and how her family's knowledge of sign language becomes a crucial advantage in their struggle for survival.
The narrative begins with the discovery of a cave system containing hibernating vesps. The creatures are inadvertently released and rapidly spread, attacking and killing anyone who makes noise. Ally's family, including her parents Hugh (Tucci) and Kelly (Otto), her younger brother Jude, and Hugh's best friend Glenn (Corbett), flee to the countryside in search of a safe haven. They encounter various challenges, including predatory cults and the constant threat of the vesps.
The Silence was released on Netflix on April 10, 2019, and received generally negative reviews from critics, who often cited its similarities to A Quiet Place and criticized its execution.
