The Plain (band)

The Plain were an American indie rock band formed in Boston, Massachusetts in the late 1990s. The band was notable for its angular guitar work, introspective lyrics, and a sound often compared to bands such as The Dismemberment Plan and Fugazi, albeit with a more melodic sensibility.

History:

The Plain was formed by core members Chris Brokaw (guitar, vocals), who had previously been a member of Come and Codeine, and Doug McCombs (bass), known for his work with Tortoise and Eleventh Dream Day. Their lineup was often augmented by various drummers, including (but not limited to) James McNew of Yo La Tengo and Britt Walford of Slint. The revolving door of drummers contributed to a sense of both experimentation and instability within the band's sound and performance.

Musical Style and Influences:

The band's music blended elements of post-punk, math rock, and indie rock. Brokaw's distinctive guitar playing, characterized by its intricate rhythms and dissonant harmonies, was a key component of their sound. Lyrically, their songs explored themes of anxiety, alienation, and the complexities of human relationships. While drawing comparisons to other bands in the post-hardcore and indie rock scenes, The Plain carved out a unique niche with their blend of introspective songwriting and unconventional musical structures.

Discography:

The Plain released two full-length albums:

  • The Plain (1999)
  • Someday All This Will Be Yours (2001)

They also released several singles and EPs.

Legacy:

Despite a relatively short lifespan, The Plain has maintained a cult following among fans of indie rock. Their music continues to be appreciated for its intelligence, complexity, and emotional depth. The members' subsequent projects in other bands have also helped to solidify their place in the history of independent music.
