The End Is Nigh (video game)
The End Is Nigh is a post-apocalyptic platformer video game developed by Edmund McMillen and Tyler Glaiel, and published by Edmund McMillen. It was released on July 12, 2017, for Microsoft Windows via Steam. Later, it was released on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and iOS.
The game follows the story of Ash, a small blob-like creature and one of the few survivors of a global apocalyptic event. Ash is determined to find a friend and sets out on a perilous journey through a decaying world filled with hazardous environments, challenging platforming sections, and mutated creatures.
Gameplay in The End Is Nigh focuses on precision platforming, requiring players to navigate difficult levels with pixel-perfect jumps, wall jumps, and precise timing. The game features hundreds of bite-sized levels scattered throughout a vast interconnected world. Players can collect tumors, which act as a form of currency and can be used to unlock bonus levels and secrets. The game is known for its high level of difficulty, often requiring players to repeat sections many times to overcome obstacles.
The game's visual style is deliberately minimalist and bleak, reflecting the desolate and decaying world Ash inhabits. The soundtrack, composed by Ridiculon, complements the game's atmosphere with melancholic and unsettling themes.
The End Is Nigh received generally positive reviews, with critics praising its challenging gameplay, intricate level design, and dark humor. Its difficulty and precise controls have been compared to other hardcore platformers, such as Super Meat Boy, which was also co-created by Edmund McMillen.
