The Colony (Bennachie)
The Colony is a cluster of stone ruins located on the slopes of Bennachie, a prominent mountain range in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. These ruins represent a small settlement established in the early 19th century, primarily occupied by agricultural labourers and their families.
The settlement was typical of many rural communities of the period, with small, simple dwellings constructed from locally sourced granite. The inhabitants were largely involved in farming and quarrying activities on and around Bennachie. The difficult terrain and harsh climate made life challenging, but the community persisted for several decades.
Over time, The Colony was gradually abandoned as people migrated to larger towns and cities in search of better employment opportunities and improved living conditions. The last residents are believed to have left the area in the mid-20th century.
Today, the ruins of The Colony serve as a reminder of a way of life that has largely disappeared. The site is a popular destination for walkers and historians interested in exploring the social and economic history of rural Scotland. The remains of the buildings, fields, and pathways provide tangible evidence of the resilience and resourcefulness of the people who once called Bennachie their home. The site is maintained and accessible to the public thanks to the efforts of local historical and conservation groups. The Aberdeenshire Council also plays a role in protecting and preserving the historical significance of the area.
