The Big 3 (folk group)
The Big 3 was an American folk group active in the early 1960s. The group consisted of Cass Elliot (then known as Ellen Naomi Cohen), Tim Rose, and James Hendricks. They were known for their harmonies and arrangements of traditional and contemporary folk songs.
The group formed in 1963 in Greenwich Village, New York City, a hotbed of the burgeoning folk revival. They signed with FM Records and released one album, The Big 3, in 1963. The album included songs such as "The Midnight Special," "Come Away Melinda," and "Grandfather's Clock."
Despite their talent and growing popularity, The Big 3 disbanded in 1964. Tim Rose pursued a solo career, and Cass Elliot and James Hendricks went on to form The Mugwumps with Denny Doherty and John Sebastian. The Mugwumps also had a short lifespan before Elliot and Doherty joined with John and Michelle Phillips to form The Mamas & the Papas, achieving considerable commercial success.
