SS Canada (1896)

The SS Canada was a passenger liner built in 1896 by Harland and Wolff in Belfast for the Dominion Line, a British shipping company operating primarily between Liverpool and North America. She was designed to carry passengers, mail, and cargo.

Canada primarily sailed the North Atlantic route, connecting Liverpool with ports in Canada, such as Quebec City and Montreal, and the United States, typically Boston. She provided both first-class and steerage accommodations, catering to a range of travellers, including immigrants seeking new lives in North America.

In 1917, during World War I, Canada was requisitioned by the British government for use as a troop transport. She played a vital role in transporting soldiers across the Atlantic to and from the European theatre of war.

Following the war, Canada was returned to the Dominion Line and resumed her commercial passenger service.

Canada was eventually scrapped in 1926, bringing an end to her career after three decades of service. She represents a significant vessel of the late 19th and early 20th centuries that played a role in transatlantic migration and wartime efforts.
