Swastika

The swastika is an ancient religious symbol, predominantly found in various cultures worldwide long before its adoption by the Nazi Party. Its name derives from the Sanskrit word svastika, meaning "well-being," "good existence," "good fortune," or "auspicious." It is often depicted as an equilateral cross with arms bent at right angles, each arm typically facing in the same rotational direction, either clockwise or counterclockwise.

Historically, the swastika has been used as a symbol of divinity, spirituality, prosperity, good luck, and life across many cultures and religions, including Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism. Archaeological evidence shows its presence in ancient civilizations across Eurasia and Africa.

However, in the 20th century, the swastika became heavily associated with Nazism and the atrocities committed by Nazi Germany. In 1920, it was adopted as the symbol of the Nazi Party (National Socialist German Workers' Party) and became emblematic of their ideology of racial supremacy, antisemitism, and aggressive expansionism. Due to the horrors perpetrated by the Nazis during World War II, including the Holocaust, the swastika has become a symbol of hate and antisemitism in many Western countries.

The symbol’s use varies significantly across different cultures and regions. In many parts of Asia, particularly in Hindu and Buddhist communities, it continues to be used as a religious symbol without any connection to Nazism. However, elsewhere, its public display often causes offense and is sometimes prohibited by law, due to its association with hate speech and incitement to violence. The context and intent behind its usage are crucial in understanding its diverse interpretations.
