Steve Reed (politician)
Steve Reed (born 12 November 1963) is a British Labour Party politician who has served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Croydon North since 2012.
Reed was born and raised in Croydon. Before entering Parliament, he served as the Leader of Lambeth Council from 2006 to 2012. During his time as Leader, Lambeth Council oversaw significant improvements in education, social care, and environmental services.
Reed was elected to Parliament in a by-election in November 2012, following the death of Malcolm Wicks. He has since been re-elected in 2015, 2017, and 2019.
In Parliament, Reed has served in various shadow ministerial positions. He was Shadow Minister for Local Government and then Shadow Minister for Communities and Local Government. He later served as Shadow Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport. As of 2024, he serves as the Shadow Deputy Secretary of State for Health and Social Care.
Reed is known for his focus on local issues affecting Croydon North, including transport, housing, and the environment. He has also been a vocal advocate for improved mental health services and tackling child poverty.
He has often spoken in Parliament about the need for greater investment in public services and a fairer society.
