Statue of Francis Scott Key (San Francisco)

The Statue of Francis Scott Key was a public artwork in San Francisco, California, dedicated to Francis Scott Key, the author of the lyrics to the United States national anthem, "The Star-Spangled Banner." The statue was located in Golden Gate Park, near the Music Concourse.

Commissioned by the McAllister Park and Improvement Fund, the bronze statue was sculpted by William Couper. It depicted Key standing, holding a scroll representing "The Star-Spangled Banner." The statue was mounted on a granite pedestal.

Unveiled in 1888, the statue became the subject of controversy in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Key's ownership of slaves and his views on race drew criticism, particularly in the context of broader discussions about historical monuments and their representation of problematic figures.

In 2020, amid widespread protests and re-evaluations of historical figures, the Statue of Francis Scott Key was toppled by protestors. The remnants were subsequently removed by the city of San Francisco. The future of the site remains under consideration.
