Starfield is an action role-playing game developed by Bethesda Game Studios and published by Bethesda Softworks. It was released on September 6, 2023, for Microsoft Windows and Xbox Series X/S.

Overview:

Starfield is Bethesda Game Studios' first new intellectual property in over 25 years. It is set in a space-faring future, approximately 300 years from now, where humanity has ventured beyond Earth to colonize other star systems in the Milky Way galaxy. Players assume the role of a customizable character who joins Constellation, a group of space explorers dedicated to uncovering the mysteries of the galaxy.

Gameplay:

The game features a large, open world environment spanning numerous star systems and planets. Players can explore these locations on foot, in spaceships, and with the aid of various tools and vehicles. Combat is a core element, involving both first-person and third-person perspectives, with a variety of weapons and skills available to the player. Starfield incorporates role-playing mechanics, allowing players to develop their character through skill trees, make choices that affect the story, and interact with a diverse cast of non-player characters. Ship customization and space combat are also prominent features. Players can design and upgrade their own spaceships, engage in dogfights, and manage crew members. Resource gathering and crafting mechanics are used for building outposts and modifying equipment.

Setting:

The game takes place in a region of space known as the Settled Systems. This region contains planets and star systems controlled by different factions, including the United Colonies, the Freestar Collective, and various independent groups. The story explores themes of exploration, humanity's place in the universe, and the consequences of technological advancement. Key locations include New Atlantis, a major city and the capital of the United Colonies, and Akila City, the capital of the Freestar Collective.

Development:

Starfield was announced in 2018 and developed using a heavily modified version of the Creation Engine, which powered previous Bethesda Game Studios titles. The development team aimed to create a vast and immersive space exploration experience, drawing inspiration from science fiction literature, film, and space exploration history. The game was initially planned for release in 2022 but was delayed to allow for further polish and refinement.
