Dinglewood House (Columbus, Georgia)
Dinglewood House is a historic house museum located in Columbus, Georgia. Built in 1859 by Joel Early Hurt, a prominent businessman and politician, the house is an example of Italianate architecture.
The house served as Hurt's residence until his death in 1897. Subsequently, the house remained in the Hurt family for several generations. During this time, it was the site of numerous social gatherings and civic events.
In 1983, Dinglewood House was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In the late 20th century, it was acquired by Historic Columbus Foundation, a local preservation organization.
The house has undergone extensive restoration and is now open to the public as a museum. Exhibits within Dinglewood House showcase the history of the house, the Hurt family, and Columbus, Georgia during the 19th century. The house also features period furnishings and decorative arts reflecting the lifestyle of a wealthy Southern family during that era.
The Dinglewood House serves as an educational resource, providing insights into the antebellum period and the post-Civil War South. It is often used for special events, including weddings and receptions. The landscaped grounds surrounding the house contribute to its historic character and charm.
