Spectacle Island (Tasmania)
Spectacle Island is a small, uninhabited island located in the D'Entrecasteaux Channel off the south-eastern coast of Tasmania, Australia. It lies close to Bruny Island, near the entrance to Barnes Bay. The island's name is derived from its distinctive shape, often described as resembling a pair of spectacles or eyeglasses from certain vantage points.
The island primarily serves as a navigational aid due to its prominent appearance and strategic location. It is largely composed of dolerite and supports some scrub vegetation. There is no documented history of permanent habitation.
While not a major tourist destination in itself, Spectacle Island is often viewed by boaters and passengers on ferries travelling between Bruny Island and the Tasmanian mainland. It forms part of the South Bruny National Park and the broader Southwest National Park World Heritage Area. Its ecological significance is primarily related to providing habitat for seabirds, although comprehensive surveys of its flora and fauna appear limited in publicly available documentation.
