Special Service Group (Navy)

The Special Service Group (Navy), often abbreviated as SSGN, is the principal special operations force of the Pakistan Navy. It is a component of the larger Special Service Group (SSG), which encompasses elements from the Pakistan Army and Pakistan Air Force.

The SSGN specializes in a variety of maritime special operations, including but not limited to:

  • Amphibious Warfare: Conducting reconnaissance, raids, and assaults from the sea.
  • Maritime Counterterrorism: Responding to terrorist threats and incidents on ships, offshore installations, and coastal areas.
  • Special Reconnaissance: Gathering intelligence in maritime environments.
  • Underwater Demolition: Clearing underwater obstacles and conducting sabotage operations.
  • Search and Rescue: Conducting rescue operations at sea and in coastal areas.
  • Protection of Maritime Assets: Providing security for naval vessels, ports, and other critical infrastructure.

The SSGN is understood to be composed of highly trained and skilled personnel, rigorously selected and trained in various disciplines, including combat diving, close quarters combat, and explosives handling. Specific details regarding the unit's size, organization, and operational deployments are generally kept confidential due to the sensitive nature of its work. The SSGN reportedly participates in joint exercises and training programs with special forces units from other countries. The selection process is considered highly demanding, with a significant attrition rate, ensuring only the most capable candidates are admitted into the unit. The group's motto and emblem are not widely publicized.
