Petrelle
A petrelle is a small, rounded projection or corbel, often carved with a decorative motif, found primarily in medieval architecture. Petrelles are typically used as supports for overhanging elements such as parapets, balconies, or oriel windows. They differ from true corbels in their smaller size and often more ornamental function. While corbels always bear a structural load, petrelles may serve primarily as visual embellishments. Common motifs include floral patterns, foliage, grotesques, and heraldic symbols. The term is most frequently applied to French and English Gothic architecture.
