Spa Road

Spa Road is a road and area located in Bermondsey, South East London, England, within the London Borough of Southwark. The name derives from a short-lived spa that operated in the area in the 18th century, attempting to capitalize on the popularity of mineral springs and health resorts.

Historically, the area around Spa Road was a more rural district, gradually developing into a residential and industrial area as London expanded. The spa itself was not a long-term success, but the name remained attached to the road and surrounding locality.

Spa Road railway station, originally opened in 1836, was one of the earliest railway stations in London. It closed to passengers in 1915 but remained open for goods traffic until the mid-20th century. The station building itself was demolished.

Today, Spa Road is a mix of residential properties, light industrial units, and commercial businesses. The area has undergone significant redevelopment in recent years, with new housing developments altering the character of some parts of the district. Although the original spa is long gone, the name continues to be used to identify the location.
