Caphosol

Caphosol is a supersaturated calcium phosphate rinse indicated as a medical device for the treatment of oral mucositis resulting from chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and/or high-dose chemotherapy with stem cell transplantation. It is also used to maintain oral hygiene and hydration in patients who are restricted from adequate food intake.

The solution is prepared by mixing two separate solutions, a phosphate solution and a calcium solution, immediately before use. When mixed, the resulting solution is supersaturated with calcium and phosphate ions. These ions coat the oral mucosa, providing a protective layer and helping to prevent further irritation. This process helps to relieve the pain and discomfort associated with oral mucositis and promotes healing.

Caphosol is considered a palliative treatment, aiming to alleviate symptoms rather than directly treating the underlying cause of the mucositis. It is typically used multiple times per day, as directed by a healthcare professional.
