Soulangis
Soulangis
Soulangis (also spelled Soulange) is a historical settlement and region located in southwestern Taiwan, primarily associated with the Siraya people, an indigenous group of Taiwan. The name "Soulangis" has been used to refer to a specific village, a broader territory encompassing several Siraya settlements, and a dialect of the Siraya language.
Historically, Soulangis played a significant role during the Dutch colonial period (1624-1662). It was one of the Siraya villages that formed alliances and engaged in conflicts with the Dutch East India Company (VOC). The Soulangis Incident in 1635, involving a revolt against Dutch rule, is a notable event in the history of Dutch Formosa.
The area associated with Soulangis is generally situated in the modern-day Tainan City region. The Siraya people of Soulangis, like other Siraya communities, have a distinct cultural heritage including unique traditions, language, and social structures. While the Siraya language is no longer widely spoken, revitalization efforts are underway, including documentation and teaching of the Soulangis dialect.
The legacy of Soulangis continues to be important for understanding the history of indigenous Taiwanese peoples and their interactions with colonial powers. Archaeological sites and historical records provide valuable insights into the lives and experiences of the Siraya people who inhabited this region.
