Sondor

Sondor is a high-altitude archaeological site located in the Chanka region of Peru, near the town of Andahuaylas, Apurimac. It is believed to have been a significant Chanka religious and administrative center, predating their incorporation into the Inca Empire.

The site consists of several distinct sectors, including platforms, plazas, and defensive walls, reflecting its complex social and political organization. A prominent feature is the Usnu, a raised platform likely used for ceremonial and administrative purposes. The architecture exhibits a distinct style, different from that of the later Inca period, characterized by finely fitted stonework and strategic placement on a hilltop overlooking the surrounding landscape.

Archaeological investigations at Sondor have revealed evidence of long-term occupation and a sophisticated understanding of engineering and architecture. The site offers valuable insights into the pre-Inca cultures of the Andes and their interaction with the environment. Ongoing research continues to shed light on the role of Sondor in the Chanka state and its eventual relationship with the Inca Empire.
