John Farrell (poet)

John Farrell (1851-1904) was an Australian poet and journalist. Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, he emigrated to Australia with his family in 1860. He worked various jobs, including as a station hand and schoolteacher, before becoming involved in journalism.

Farrell is best known for his poetry, which often focused on Australian themes and landscapes, as well as social justice issues. His work appeared in numerous Australian newspapers and magazines. He published two collections of poetry during his lifetime: How He Died, and Other Poems (1887) and My Sundowner, and Other Poems (1904). My Sundowner, and Other Poems was published posthumously, with an introduction by A.G. Stephens.

Farrell's poetry is characterized by its simplicity and directness. He often wrote in ballad form, using colloquial language to appeal to a wide audience. His poems frequently celebrated the lives of ordinary Australians, particularly those working in rural areas. He was a strong advocate for the working class and often used his poetry to criticize social inequality.

Despite not achieving widespread fame during his lifetime, Farrell is now recognized as an important figure in Australian literary history. His work provides valuable insights into Australian society and culture in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
