Soddo (woreda)
Soddo, also known as Wolayita Soddo, is a woreda (district) located in the Wolaita Zone of the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples' Region (SNNPR) of Ethiopia. It is coterminous with the city of Soddo, which serves as the administrative center for both the woreda and the Wolaita Zone.
As a special woreda, Soddo’s administration reports directly to the zonal administration. It functions as a separate administrative unit from other woredas within the Wolaita Zone.
The woreda is characterized by its urban center, Soddo city, which is a significant economic and educational hub for the surrounding region. While primarily urban, the woreda also includes peri-urban agricultural areas that contribute to the local economy.
Soddo is known for its relatively high population density and its diverse population, drawing residents from various parts of the Wolaita Zone and other regions of Ethiopia. The dominant ethnic group is the Wolayta people, and the Wolaytta language is widely spoken.
The woreda is served by several educational institutions, including Wolaita Sodo University, a major public university in Ethiopia.
Key sectors of the Soddo woreda's economy include trade, services, and agriculture. The city's central location makes it a significant trading center for agricultural products from the surrounding rural areas. Small-scale industries and businesses are also present within the woreda.
Information regarding specific boundaries, populations outside the city limits, and detailed administrative data may be found in official sources from the Ethiopian Central Statistical Agency.
