Skunk River (Iowa)

The Skunk River is a 205-mile-long (330 km) tributary of the Mississippi River in southeastern Iowa. It is formed by the confluence of the North Skunk River and the South Skunk River near Colfax, Iowa.

The river flows generally southeast, passing through several counties including Jasper, Keokuk, Washington, and Henry, before joining the Mississippi River near the city of Burlington.

The name "Skunk River" is believed to be a translation of the Native American name "Che-ca-qua," or "Shecaqua," referring to the prevalence of skunks in the area. Historically, the river and its surrounding lands were inhabited by various Native American tribes.

The Skunk River watershed encompasses a significant agricultural region of Iowa, and the river is subject to agricultural runoff and associated water quality issues. Efforts have been made to improve water quality through conservation practices and watershed management. The river provides recreational opportunities, including fishing, canoeing, and kayaking, although these activities can be impacted by water levels and conditions.
