Siege of Delhi (1804)

The Siege of Delhi (1804) was a military engagement during the Second Anglo-Maratha War. It took place in Delhi, India, between October 8 and October 15, 1804, involving British East India Company forces commanded by Colonel David Ochterlony against Maratha forces commanded by Jaswant Rao Holkar.

Holkar's army, which significantly outnumbered Ochterlony's garrison, laid siege to the city. The British garrison, though small, was well-fortified within the walls of Delhi and included Sepoy troops. Ochterlony effectively defended the city, utilizing the existing fortifications and employing skillful tactics.

Despite repeated assaults and attempts to breach the walls, Holkar's forces were unable to overcome the British defenses. The siege lasted for a week, during which time the defenders suffered casualties but held their ground.

Ultimately, the siege was lifted when news reached Holkar that British reinforcements under General Gerard Lake were approaching. Facing the prospect of being caught between two British forces, Holkar withdrew his army from Delhi.

The successful defense of Delhi was a significant achievement for the British East India Company, preventing the Marathas from consolidating their position in North India and further disrupting British interests. It solidified British control over Delhi and its surrounding territory and significantly damaged Holkar's reputation and military strength, contributing to his eventual defeat in the war.
