Jewel Records (Shreveport record label)

Jewel Records was an American independent record label based in Shreveport, Louisiana, founded in 1945 by Stan Lewis. Initially focused on blues, gospel, and rhythm and blues, Jewel Records became a prominent label for recordings in the South.

The label and its subsidiaries, including Paula Records, Ronn Records, and Whit Records, released music by a diverse roster of artists. Noteworthy blues artists who recorded for Jewel include Lightnin' Hopkins, Lowell Fulson, and Frank Frost. In gospel, the label featured groups like the Sensational Nightingales and the Pilgrim Jubilee Singers. Jewel's R&B output showcased talents such as John Fred & His Playboy Band, best known for their hit "Judy in Disguise (With Glasses)."

Stan Lewis also owned Stan's Record Shop in Shreveport, a key outlet for promoting and selling Jewel Records' releases. The label's success was intertwined with the region's musical heritage and Lewis's ability to identify and nurture local talent. While Jewel Records had periods of inactivity, it remained a significant player in the independent record label scene, preserving and distributing music that reflected the diverse sounds of the American South. Jewel Records and its subsidiary labels ceased major operations by the late 1970s, though their recordings continued to be reissued.
