Newry (Parliament of Ireland constituency)

The constituency of Newry was a parliamentary borough in County Down, Ireland. It returned two members to the Parliament of Ireland from its creation in 1613 until the Act of Union in 1800, when it was absorbed into the United Kingdom constituency of Newry.

History

Newry was incorporated as a borough by Royal Charter in 1575 but did not return members to Parliament until 1613. The franchise was vested in the freeholders of the borough. Patronage was significant, and influence was often exerted by the Needham family (Viscounts Kilmorey) and later the Earls of Kilmorey. The town's economic importance and strategic location contributed to its political significance.
