Siege of Barcelona (1651)

The Siege of Barcelona in 1651 was a military engagement during the Catalan Revolt (also known as the Reapers' War), a conflict that pitted Catalonia, backed by France, against Habsburg Spain. The siege was undertaken by Spanish forces under the command of Don Juan José de Austria, an illegitimate son of King Philip IV of Spain.

The city of Barcelona, a major stronghold of the Catalan rebels and a crucial port, had been under the control of the Franco-Catalan forces for several years. The Spanish sought to regain control of the city and the wider Catalan territory.

The siege began in 1651 with a land blockade and naval blockade of the city. The Spanish forces constructed fortifications around Barcelona to prevent supplies from reaching the defenders. The defending Franco-Catalan forces, under the command of figures like Josep Margarit, put up a strong resistance. However, due to the prolonged siege and the effectiveness of the blockade, Barcelona began to suffer from severe shortages of food and other essential supplies.

The siege lasted for over a year. Despite several attempts to break the blockade or relieve the city, the Franco-Catalan forces were unable to dislodge the Spanish. Eventually, with the city on the brink of starvation and with disease spreading, the defenders of Barcelona surrendered to the Spanish forces in October 1652.

The recapture of Barcelona by the Spanish marked a turning point in the Catalan Revolt. While fighting continued in other parts of Catalonia, the loss of Barcelona significantly weakened the Franco-Catalan cause and ultimately led to the eventual defeat of the rebellion and the re-establishment of Spanish authority over Catalonia. The terms of surrender were relatively lenient, aiming to pacify the region and reintegrate it into the Spanish realm.
