Shō Kyō

Shō Kyō (正興) is a Ryukyuan name, most commonly associated with a period in the history of the Ryukyu Kingdom. It refers to the reign name (年号, nengō in Japanese, though often translated as "era name") adopted by King Shō Kō (尚弘毅) in 1477. This marked the beginning of the Second Shō Dynasty (第二尚氏王統), which ruled the Ryukyu Kingdom until its annexation by Japan in 1879.

The term "Shō Kyō" may also occasionally refer to individuals who lived during this era or to events closely tied to the reign of Shō Kō and the early years of the Second Shō Dynasty. However, its primary significance remains its identification as the era name designating this important period of Ryukyuan history. The adoption of an era name was a significant act of state, demonstrating the Ryukyu Kingdom's adoption of practices prevalent in East Asian monarchies.
