Seiu Ito

Seiu Ito (伊藤晴雨, Itō Seiu, 1882 – 1961) was a Japanese artist known primarily for his paintings and illustrations depicting kinbaku, or rope bondage. He is considered a significant figure in the history of erotic art in Japan and a key proponent of the kinbaku subgenre.

Ito was born in the Okayama Prefecture. He originally trained as a painter, studying traditional Japanese art techniques. However, he gradually shifted his focus to erotic subjects, particularly those involving rope bondage. His work often featured women in intricate and elaborate rope arrangements, depicted with a high level of detail and artistic skill.

Beyond kinbaku depictions, Ito also created illustrations for books and magazines, often featuring historical and cultural themes. He worked under various pseudonyms throughout his career.

Seiu Ito's work generated considerable controversy during his lifetime and continues to be debated today. Some view his art as exploitative and misogynistic, while others consider it a legitimate form of artistic expression that explores themes of sexuality, power, and control. His influence on contemporary kinbaku and erotic art is undeniable, and his works are now held in private collections and occasionally exhibited in museums.
