Scoresby (crater)

Scoresby is a prominent lunar impact crater located in the northern part of the Moon, near the lunar north pole. It lies within the region that is sometimes illuminated by sunlight, depending on the Moon's libration. Its location puts it near several other noteworthy craters, including Chales to the northeast, and Peary to the north-northwest.

The crater's most notable feature is its heavily eroded and irregular outer rim. Several smaller impact craters have impacted the rim, particularly along the southern and western sides, further disrupting its circular shape. The interior floor is relatively flat and featureless, though it may contain some small craterlets and surface irregularities. Due to its age and the numerous impacts it has sustained, the crater lacks the sharp features typically associated with younger craters.

Scoresby is named after William Scoresby, a British Arctic explorer, scientist, and clergyman. He is best known for his contributions to the understanding of the Arctic regions and for his studies of snow crystals.
