HMS Cockatrice (J229)

HMS Cockatrice (J229) was a turbine-powered Algerine-class minesweeper of the Royal Navy. She was built by Harland and Wolff, Belfast, and launched on 25 November 1943. Commissioned in 1944, she served during the later stages of World War II.

The Algerine class was designed for minesweeping duties but were adaptable and often used for convoy escort and anti-submarine warfare. HMS Cockatrice served primarily in these roles.

Following the war, HMS Cockatrice remained in service with the Royal Navy. She was involved in various peacetime duties and exercises, often operating in UK home waters. She was eventually sold for scrap in 1961. The ship's name is derived from the mythical Cockatrice, a creature with the head of a rooster and the body of a serpent.
