Schutter (Danube)

A Schutter (plural: Schutter or Schuttere depending on the region and context) is a traditional type of barge or flat-bottomed boat formerly used extensively on the Danube River and its tributaries. Schuttere were typically constructed of wood and varied considerably in size and design depending on their specific purpose and the section of the river they navigated. They were particularly well-suited for navigating the often shallow and fast-flowing currents of the Danube.

The primary function of Schuttere was the transportation of goods, including agricultural products like grain and hay, building materials such as stone and timber, and manufactured items. They were also used for passenger transport, though less frequently.

The use of Schuttere declined significantly with the advent of steam-powered vessels and the development of railway networks in the 19th and 20th centuries, which offered faster and more efficient transportation alternatives. Today, examples of traditional Schuttere are primarily found in museums or used for historical reenactments and tourism purposes, serving as a reminder of the Danube River's rich maritime history. The term may also persist regionally to refer to specific types of small boats used for fishing or recreational purposes, reflecting local Danube River traditions.
