Sanusi (politician)

Sanusi Lamido Sanusi (Sanusi II) (born July 31, 1961) is a Nigerian economist and former banker who has held prominent positions in both the financial sector and traditional leadership.

Biography and Career:

Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, often referred to as Sanusi II, was born in Kano, Nigeria. He received his education in economics and Islamic studies. He began his banking career in 1985 at Icon Limited (Merchant Bankers), a subsidiary of Morgan Guaranty Trust. He subsequently worked for the United Bank for Africa (UBA) and First Bank of Nigeria, rising through the ranks to senior management positions.

Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN):

Sanusi was appointed Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in June 2009. During his tenure, he implemented significant reforms aimed at stabilizing the banking sector, curbing inflation, and promoting financial inclusion. He is particularly noted for his efforts to address corruption and mismanagement within the banking system, leading to the prosecution of several bank executives. His policies also included the introduction of a cashless policy. His term as CBN Governor ended in 2014.

Emir of Kano:

In June 2014, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi was appointed the Emir of Kano, succeeding his grand-uncle, Ado Bayero. As Emir, he held a significant traditional and religious role in the Kano Emirate. He used his position to advocate for social reforms, including education, family planning, and poverty reduction. He was also a vocal critic of government policies and societal issues.

Dethronement:

In March 2020, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi was dethroned as the Emir of Kano by the Kano State Government, citing insubordination to the government as the reason. His dethronement was followed by his exile to Nassarawa State.

Post-Emirate:

Following his dethronement, Sanusi has remained a prominent voice on economic and social issues, both in Nigeria and internationally. He continues to advocate for good governance, financial literacy, and sustainable development. He has held various advisory positions and continues to speak at conferences and forums on topics related to economics, finance, and social justice. He was reappointed as the Emir of Kano in May 2024.
