Sandow (apple)

The Sandow is a cultivar of apple originating in Canada. It is believed to be a McIntosh seedling discovered around 1910 near the town of Prescott, Ontario. The apple is medium-sized, typically round to round-conic in shape, and characterized by its bright red skin, often with darker red striping. The flesh is crisp, juicy, and white, with a mildly tart flavor.

Sandow apples are considered a good eating apple, suitable for fresh consumption. They can also be used in cooking, though their flavor may be somewhat subtle compared to other varieties.

While once relatively popular in eastern Canada, particularly Ontario and Quebec, Sandow apple production has declined in recent decades, being superseded by newer and more widely marketed cultivars. It is now considered a heritage or heirloom apple variety, often found in older orchards or cultivated by apple enthusiasts. The apple is generally harvested in mid-season.
