Peter Kern (actor)
Peter Kern (February 13, 1949 – August 26, 2015) was an Austrian actor, film director, screenwriter, producer, and author. He was a prominent figure in the New German Cinema movement.
Born in Vienna, Kern was known for his often transgressive and provocative films, exploring themes of sexuality, identity, and societal taboos. He began his career primarily as an actor, appearing in films by Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Rosa von Praunheim, and Werner Schroeter, among others.
Kern transitioned to directing in the 1970s, creating a body of work that challenged conventional cinematic narratives. His films often featured non-professional actors and explored the fringes of society. Notable films include Die Globolinks (1972), Savage Lust (1979), The Last Summer of the Rich (1991), and Muttertag – The Hardcore Mother's Day (1993).
Beyond his filmmaking, Kern was also a writer, contributing to various publications and releasing autobiographical works. His work, both on screen and in print, often reflected his own experiences and perspectives on queer culture and social marginalization. He remained an active figure in European independent cinema until his death in 2015.
