Sandhya (ruler of Kamarupa)
Sandhya was a ruler of Kamarupa in present-day Assam, India, during the latter half of the 13th century CE. He belonged to the Pala dynasty, which was a later branch descended from the earlier, more prominent Pala dynasty of Bengal. Sandhya's reign marked a period of decline and instability for the kingdom of Kamarupa, facing pressure from external forces, particularly the Turkic and Khen invaders, as well as internal rebellions.
Historical records regarding Sandhya are fragmented and sometimes contradictory, primarily drawn from inscriptions and accounts found in chronicles such as the Yogini Tantra. These sources suggest a weakening of centralized authority and an increase in regional autonomy during his rule. The constant warfare and political maneuvering further eroded the kingdom's resources and stability.
Sandhya is often considered one of the last significant rulers of the Pala dynasty of Kamarupa before its eventual disintegration. After his rule, the kingdom fragmented into smaller entities, paving the way for the rise of new powers in the region. His reign is remembered as a period of transition and decline, preceding a significant shift in the political landscape of Assam.
