Sandelia
Sandelia is a genus of ray-finned fish in the family Anabantidae, commonly known as African leaffish. These fish are native to southern Africa. They are characterized by their flattened bodies and cryptic coloration, resembling dead leaves in their natural habitat. Sandelia are ambush predators, lying in wait for small invertebrates and fish. The genus contains two recognized species: Sandelia bainsii (Eastern Cape leaffish) and Sandelia capensis (Cape kurper). Their populations are threatened by habitat loss and degradation, as well as the introduction of invasive species. Sandelia bainsii is listed as Endangered and Sandelia capensis as Near Threatened by the IUCN. Conservation efforts are focused on protecting their remaining habitats and controlling invasive species.
