Sam Yan
Sam Yan is a historical and commercial district in Bangkok, Thailand. It is located within Pathum Wan district and is traditionally defined by the intersection of Rama IV Road, Phaya Thai Road, and Henri Dunant Road. The name "Sam Yan" literally translates to "three neighborhoods" or "three junctions" in Thai.
Historically, Sam Yan was known for its Chinese immigrant community and its shophouses offering various goods and services. Over time, it has evolved into a vibrant mix of old and new, with traditional businesses existing alongside modern developments. The area is characterized by its mix of residential buildings, educational institutions, commercial spaces, and cultural attractions.
One of the most significant landmarks in Sam Yan is Chulalongkorn University, Thailand's oldest and one of its most prestigious universities. The university's presence has shaped the character of the area, attracting students and academics.
In recent years, Sam Yan has undergone significant redevelopment, with the construction of modern shopping malls, condominiums, and the Sam Yan MRT station, which connects the area to Bangkok's extensive subway system. This has led to both economic opportunities and concerns about the displacement of long-time residents and businesses. Despite these changes, Sam Yan retains much of its unique character and remains an important part of Bangkok's urban landscape.
