SS Belgic

The SS Belgic was the name of several steamships operated by the White Star Line:

  • SS Belgic (1873): A cargo and passenger liner originally built for the Guion Line as the Mississippi. White Star Line purchased her while under construction and renamed her Belgic. She served primarily on the South Atlantic route before being converted to a cargo-only ship. She was sold to the Spanish Navy in 1899 and renamed Magallanes.

  • SS Belgic (1885): Originally named Belgenland, she was built for the Red Star Line, a sister company of White Star Line. White Star Line chartered her in 1895 and renamed her Belgic. She primarily served on the Liverpool-New York route and later the Liverpool-Australia route. She was refitted in 1899 and continued service until scrapped in 1903. This Belgic also served as a troop transport during the Second Boer War.
