SMS Prinz Eugen (1862)
SMS Prinz Eugen was an armored frigate built for the Austrian Navy in the 1860s. She was named after Prince Eugene of Savoy, a prominent Austrian general.
Prinz Eugen was built by Stabilimento Tecnico Triestino in Trieste. She was laid down in 1862, launched in 1862, and completed in 1863. The ship was designed as a casemate ironclad, mounting her main armament within a central armored box.
Her armament typically consisted of a number of rifled breech-loading guns, and possibly smaller secondary guns for defense against torpedo boats. The exact composition of her armament may have changed during her service life.
Prinz Eugen saw action in the Battle of Lissa in 1866 during the Austro-Prussian War. During the battle, she engaged in heavy fighting against Italian ironclads.
After the war, Prinz Eugen remained in service with the Austro-Hungarian Navy. She underwent refits and modernizations during her career. The ship was eventually stricken from the naval register in 1896 and later scrapped. Her career exemplified the early development of ironclad warships and their role in naval warfare during the mid-19th century.
