Sōunkyō

Sōunkyō (層雲峡) is a gorge located in Hokkaido, Japan, within the Daisetsuzan National Park. It is renowned for its dramatic cliffs, waterfalls, and the columnar jointing of its volcanic rock formations. The gorge stretches for approximately 24 kilometers along the Ishikari River and is a popular destination for tourists seeking natural beauty and outdoor recreation.

The name "Sōunkyō" translates roughly to "layer cloud gorge" or "gorge of layered clouds", a reference to the frequent cloud cover that blankets the area. The gorge was formed through volcanic activity and subsequent erosion by the Ishikari River. The striking rock formations are a result of cooling lava flows that fractured into hexagonal or polygonal columns.

Key attractions within Sōunkyō include the Ryūsei-no-taki (Shooting Star Falls) and Ginga-no-taki (Milky Way Falls), two prominent waterfalls cascading down the cliffs. Other notable viewpoints and hiking trails offer panoramic views of the gorge and the surrounding mountains. Sōunkyō Onsen, a hot spring resort town located at the entrance to the gorge, provides accommodation and relaxation opportunities for visitors. The area is particularly popular during the autumn months when the foliage displays vibrant colors.
