Romeo and Juliet (1900 film)
The 1900 film Romeo and Juliet is a silent film adaptation of William Shakespeare's play of the same name. It is believed to be the earliest film version of the play. Produced by the Société Pathé Frères, the film is very short, running only about one minute in length.
The extant footage depicts the balcony scene and the sword fight between Romeo and Tybalt. The film is notable for its early use of cinematic techniques to stage the play, despite the limitations of the technology at the time. It provides a historical glimpse into the nascent stages of filmmaking and the adaptation of classic literature to the screen. The film starred Emile Goudeau as Romeo and possibly, but less certainly, Jeanne D'Alcy as Juliet. Given its age, the film is in the public domain.
