Roger Nichols (songwriter)
Roger Nichols (1944-2011) was an American songwriter, composer, and arranger best known for his collaborations with lyricist Paul Williams. Together, they wrote numerous hit songs in the 1970s, many of which became standards.
Nichols was a multi-instrumentalist, proficient in piano, keyboards, and other instruments. His music was characterized by sophisticated harmonies, memorable melodies, and inventive arrangements. He often employed complex chord changes and unusual song structures, setting his work apart from much of the pop music of the era.
Notable songs co-written by Nichols and Williams include:
- "We've Only Just Begun" (made famous by The Carpenters)
- "Rainy Days and Mondays" (also a hit for The Carpenters)
- "I Won't Last a Day Without You" (recorded by several artists, including The Carpenters)
- "Out in the Country" (popularized by Three Dog Night)
- "An Old Fashioned Love Song" (a hit for Three Dog Night)
Nichols also worked with other lyricists and artists throughout his career, and contributed to film and television soundtracks. His work has been recognized with multiple Grammy Awards. Despite his significant contributions to popular music, he remained a relatively low-profile figure, often preferring to let his songs speak for themselves. He is considered a highly influential figure among musicians and songwriters.
