Historically, the term "paladin" is derived from the twelve legendary knights of Charlemagne's court, prominent in medieval literature and folklore. These knights were considered the emperor's closest companions and most valiant warriors, embodying the ideals of Christian knighthood and defending his realm against threats both internal and external. Roland, also known as Orlando, is perhaps the most famous of Charlemagne's paladins.

In modern fantasy literature and role-playing games, the paladin archetype often takes on a more codified and explicitly religious form. Paladins in these contexts are usually holy warriors dedicated to a particular deity or philosophy of good. They are typically granted divine powers, such as healing, protection, and the ability to smite evil, and are bound by strict oaths and codes of conduct. Deviation from these oaths can result in the loss of their powers and status. Their role often involves fighting injustice, protecting the innocent, and upholding the tenets of their faith. Common characteristics associated with paladins in fantasy settings include unwavering loyalty, courage, and a strong sense of justice.

The word "paladin" is also sometimes used more generally to describe anyone who is a staunch defender of a particular cause or principle, regardless of religious affiliation or martial prowess. In this sense, a paladin is someone who passionately champions a belief or defends a person or group in need.
