Robert Smith (Medal of Honor)
Robert Smith was a United States Army soldier who received the Medal of Honor for his actions during the Vietnam War.
Born on October 25, 1946, Smith served as a Staff Sergeant with the 2nd Platoon, Company C, 3rd Battalion, 21st Infantry Regiment, 196th Infantry Brigade, Americal Division. On February 16, 1967, near Suoi Da, Republic of Vietnam, his platoon came under intense enemy fire.
During the battle, Smith repeatedly exposed himself to the enemy to direct fire and provide covering fire for his men, allowing them to withdraw and regroup. When the enemy attempted to outflank his position, Smith single-handedly charged the enemy, inflicting heavy casualties and disrupting their attack. Later, despite being wounded, he continued to fight until the enemy was forced to withdraw.
Smith's extraordinary heroism and selflessness in the face of grave danger earned him the Medal of Honor. His citation details his unwavering courage and leadership, which were instrumental in saving the lives of his fellow soldiers.
He was presented with the Medal of Honor by President Lyndon B. Johnson on October 24, 1968.
