While serving as a landsman on board the USS Varuna, Dix displayed bravery and meritorious conduct during the ship's engagement with Confederate ironclad CSS Louisiana and the ram CSS Governor Moore during the Battle of New Orleans on April 24, 1862. Despite heavy fire, Dix remained at his post, assisting in the operation of the ship's guns and providing support to the crew. His actions contributed to the Varuna's defense until it was ultimately sunk.
