Robert Boone (baseball)
Robert Melvin Boone (born April 19, 1947) is an American former professional baseball catcher, coach, and manager in Major League Baseball (MLB). He played for the Philadelphia Phillies (1972–1981), California Angels (1982–1988), Kansas City Royals (1989), and Atlanta Braves (1990).
Boone was a four-time All-Star (1976, 1978, 1979, 1981) and a Gold Glove Award winner in 1978 and 1979. He was known for his durability, having set a then-MLB record for most games caught by a catcher (2,225). He was also a respected leader and handled pitching staffs effectively.
After his playing career, Boone managed the Kansas City Royals (1995–1997) and the Cincinnati Reds (2001–2003). He has also served as a coach for several MLB teams.
He comes from a baseball family; his father, Ray Boone, was a former MLB player, and his sons, Bret and Aaron Boone, also had MLB careers. Aaron Boone is currently the manager of the New York Yankees.
