Richard Roberts (priest)

Richard Roberts (1874-1953) was a Welsh Congregational minister, theologian, and pacifist. Born in Brynsiencyn, Anglesey, Wales, Roberts emigrated to the United States in 1905.

Roberts was a prominent figure in the Social Gospel movement. He advocated for social justice, economic equality, and world peace. He was deeply influenced by the teachings of Jesus and believed that Christianity demanded active engagement in addressing social problems.

During World War I, Roberts was a vocal critic of the war and a staunch pacifist. He argued that violence was incompatible with the teachings of Jesus and that Christians should strive for peace through nonviolent means. His pacifist stance was controversial at the time, but it earned him respect from many who shared his convictions.

Roberts held pastorates at several churches in the United States and Canada, including the Church of the Pilgrims in Brooklyn, New York, and American Church in Montreal. He was a gifted preacher and writer, known for his eloquent and insightful sermons and books. Some of his notable works include The Red Blood, That Strange Little Brown Man, Gandhi, The Untried Door, and The Rendezvous with God.

Roberts returned to Wales in 1948 and died in 1953. He is remembered as a leading voice for social justice and peace in the 20th century. His writings continue to inspire those who seek to apply Christian principles to the challenges of the modern world.
